Public Sector Management and Public Sector Administration
The University of Canterbury is ideally situated for training in Public Sector Management, the City of Christchurch being jointly awarded the Carl Bertelsmann Prize in 1993 for the best-run city government in the world. Training programmes cover governance and policy, management, economics, sustainability, city management, and public sector reform. Visits to and contributions from government agencies and companies are organised, and field trips may also be arranged to visit central Government in Wellington. Depending on the requirements of the client, some programmes may be co-taught by Victoria University in Wellington, taking advantage of its proximity to central Government. Programmes can include additional subject matter in any areas requested by the client. Management topics can also be included in any of the other International Training Programmes offered by the University.

Commercial and Enterprise Management
New Zealand has developed a reputation for innovative enterprise as it seeks to compete in global markets. Training programmes in Commercial and Enterprise Management introduce participants to the latest theory and best practice in management, economics, marketing, accounting, e-commerce and international trade. Management topics can also include human resource management, change management, leadership, project management, professional development and sustainability. Visits are organised to leading enterprises, particularly in the electronics, engineering and primary products processing industries. Local and national economic development agencies may also contribute to programmes, giving participants the opportunity to meet with key economic development officials.

Engineering Management
Engineering Management courses provide up-to-date professional development in the skills needed to manage modern engineering projects and enterprises. Courses take advantage of the University of Canterbury's leading College of Engineering, with its world-class research and teaching in areas such as construction, earthquake, fire protection, nanotechnology, sustainable technology and computer engineering. The burgeoning high-tech industry in Christchurch makes it an excellent place to study engineering management. Courses can include training in technology and innovation management, project management, human resources management, marketing and quality management, and other topics by request.

Environmental and Natural Resource Management
Training courses in Environmental and Natural Resource Management cover the latest best practice in management processes and the most up-to-date scientific research and technology. Programmes can cover the following areas: water resources and water quality, air pollution, land and soil management, conservation management, biodiversity, sustainability, biosecurity, coastal management, integrated environmental management, engineering processes, biotechnology, waste management, ecological engineering and environmental education. Other areas can also be included on request. Field visits can include local, regional and national government, companies, and research centres. Environmental management topics can also be incorporated into other training programmes, such as Public Sector Management and Agriculture.

Forestry Management and Wood Products Processing
The University of Canterbury's New Zealand School of Forestry is an acknowledged world leader in areas such as forestry modelling and management. Training courses in Forestry and Wood Products take advantage of the wealth of expertise available in the School of Forestry, as well as expertise from Forest Research, a governmental research institute also with a branch on the University campus. Field visits can be undertaken to natural forests, plantation forests, processing operations and conservation sites throughout the country. Training can also include aspects of management, marketing, international trade, sustainability and biosecurity, and any other areas by request.

Agriculture and Animal Husbandry
Agriculture and its associated industries together form one of New Zealand's largest export sectors. Training courses are run in conjunction with Lincoln University, conveniently located in the rural town of Lincoln near Christchurch and 20-25 minutes from the University of Canterbury by car. Courses can include aspects of management, marketing, international trade, sustainability, biosecurity, aquaculture and forestry, and any other areas by request. Field visits can be undertaken to any of a wide variety of farming operations, research institutes and processing industries.

Biosecurity
Biosecurity is becoming increasingly recognised worldwide as being of critical importance for ecological and economic protection. Owing to the need to protect its unique flora and fauna and its thriving agricultural industry, New Zealand has some of the strictest biosecurity regulations and procedures in the world. The University of Canterbury can provide expert training in the latest biosecurity knowledge, policies and procedures, and their impacts on agriculture, trade, tourism and public sector administration.

International LawThe University of Canterbury has one of the largest International Law groups in Australasia, and publishes the New Zealand Yearbook of International Law. Specialists can provide training in International Trade Law and the World Trade Organisation (WTO), International Environmental Law, International Humanitarian Law and International Organisations.
Natural Hazard ManagementNew Zealand has significant technical and management expertise in coping with earthquakes, floods, landslides, volcanoes, storms and other natural hazards. The University of Canterbury in particular has world-leading expertise in seismic/earthquake engineering and geology, and in hazard mitigation and management, which can be incorporated into training programmes.
Information Technology, Information Systems and SoftwareCanterbury has been referred to as the "Silicon Plains" of New Zealand, based on its leading ICT, software and electronics industries. Training is available at the University of Canterbury in specialist areas of ICT and information systems. Topics can include: networks, security, computer forensics, visualisation technology, information systems for organisations, e-commerce, commercialisation and innovation, e-learning and project management.
